The Clean Vehicle Rebate Program provides incentives for Delawareans and Delaware businesses to buy or lease new alternative fuel vehicles.
The vehicle rebate program encourages the deployment of electric, natural gas, and propane-powered vehicles. It is aligned with Delaware’s commitment to innovation in the transportation sector, reducing greenhouse gases, and improving Delaware’s air quality.
The program complements the Delaware Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Rebate Program which provides rebates for Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations. There are now 38 electric charging and alternative fuel stations in Delaware.
The rebate program is only for passenger vehicles (classes 1 through 6).
For class 7 and 8 vehicles, please see the Heavy Duty Vehicle Program. Fleets are limited to six vehicle rebates, while individuals are limited to one vehicle rebate.
To be eligible for a rebate, the vehicle must be new (purchased or leased between November 1, 2016 and June 30, 2018).
Depending on vehicle type and the technology used to power the vehicle, rebates range from $1,000 to $3,500. There are a wide variety of vehicles available that qualify.
|Type of Vehicle/Vehicle Technology||Rebate|
|New Battery Electric Vehicles||$3,500|
|New Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (Including gasoline range extenders)||$1,500|
|Retrofitted Battery Electric and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles||$1,500|
|New Battery Electric or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles with MSRP >$60,000||$1,000|
|New Dedicated Propane or Natural Gas Vehicles||$1,500|
|New Bi-Fuel Propane or Natural Gas Vehicles||$1,350|
|New Heavy-Duty Dedicated Natural Gas Trucks (Classes 7 & 8)||$20,000|
You can apply for a rebate either directly or through a participating auto dealer. You do not need to purchase a vehicle from a participating dealership to qualify for a rebate. Participating dealers, however, are able to roll your rebate into your monthly lease or financing. All applications must be signed by both the purchaser and a dealer representative. The applicant is responsible for ensuring that all documentation is complete.
To apply for a Clean Vehicle Rebate please submit all required documents (except the W-9 form, which must be submitted online) to the Delaware Division of Energy and Climate. Documents can be sent via email (DNREC.Transportation@state.de.us) or by US mail (100 W. Water Street, Suite 5A, Dover, DE 19904).
Find a participating dealer and let them know that you are interested in the Delaware Clean Vehicle Rebate Program. Purchase or lease (for at least 36 months) an eligible vehicle. Participating dealers will roll vehicle rebates into the purchase or lease (documentation of this is required). Complete the Clean Vehicle Rebate application and sign the section “If Dealer is Receiving Rebate” on page 2.
