In 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) initiated an exposure assessment for perf- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the community near the New Castle Air National Guard Base in New Castle County.

A Nationwide Testing Program

The exposure assessment in New Castle County was completed as part of a nationwide testing program near current or former military bases known to have had PFAS substances in their drinking water.

Participants provided blood and urine samples to CDC/ATSDR for analysis. The CDC/ATSDR evaluated the data from the exposure assessment to better understand PFAS exposure in the community.

The CDC/ATSDR provided the results directly to the participants, and summarized the results in a fact sheet in June 2020.

Meeting Drinking Water Standards

Artesian Water and the city of New Castle Municipal Services Commission are treating the public drinking water to remove the PFAS compounds, PFOS and PFOA, so the water does not exceed EPA’s Health Advisory Level.

The drinking water supplied by Artesian Water and the city of New Castle continues to meet federal and state Safe Drinking Water Act standards.
